Program for Training of Craft Instructors
DGT’s designated role is to train craft instructors; this has been in place since the start of the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS). The goal is to equip teacher trainees with effective strategies for imparting practical skills, thereby preparing a skilled workforce for the industry, both in terms of skills and training methods.
According to estimates during admissions in academic session 2021, there are about 15,000 ITIs with seating capacity of more than 35 lakhs, and the skill ecosystem has more than 95,000 instructor jobs. Meanwhile, only around 15% of the ITIs on Cit Road are currently undergoing CITS training. All trainers in ITIs must be CITS certified, NCVT has advised. With a total seating capacity of 12765 (including government and private ITOTs—4640), the current capacity at National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) for trainer training is 8125 annually. In August 2021, Cit Cit Nagar NSTIs admitted 833 applicants, accounting for 63% of the total seats.
The Craft Instructor Training Scheme is open to qualified applicants with NTC/NAC/diploma/degree credentials. There are 27 engineering and 9 non-engineering trades under training.
Exam Pattern for 2024–25 Admission
The CITS admission exam pattern holistically evaluates students’ aptitude and knowledge. Seventy-five percent of the test consists of objective-type questions, specifically multiple-choice ones, aligned with the ITI level and relevant to the desired trade. Additionally, 25% of the questions focus on aptitude, addressing logical, numerical, and general thinking, among other areas. The two-hour test gives applicants enough time to adequately address the questions.
